George F. Jordan, now living retired in Kenosha, was for many years prominently identified with agricultural and dairying interests, and so successfully and able conducted his business that it brought to him a substantial financial return that now permits him to rest from further labors. He is a native son of Wisconsin, his birth having occurred in the Town of Somers, in what was then Racine County but is now Kenosha County, October 13, 1848, his parents being Thomas and Mary (Schofield) Jordan, both of whom were natives of England, where they remained until after their marriage, their home being at Rochdale in Lancashire.
They came to the United States in 1842, crossing the Atlantic in a sailing vessel, and made their way direct to Kenosha. They were accompanied on the trip by Mrs. Jordan's mother, Mrs. Anne Buckley. After remaining in the city of Kenosha for two months, Thomas Jordan went to the Town of Somers and purchased land from David Crossit, devoting his days to the further development and improvement of that property until 1879, when he again took up his abode in Kenosha, where he lived retired until his death.
His widow survived him for a time but has also passed away. In their family were seven children: Henry F., who was born in England and is now engaged in the insurance business in Kenosha; Anna E., who is the widow of Edward Cheetham and lives in Chicago; Maria J., also of Kenosha; John S., a resident of Seattle, Washington; Thomas W., of Sioux City, Iowa; George F., and Frank L., deceased.
Born in Kenosha County, George F. Jordan attended school in District No. 2 of the Town of Somers and continued his education in the high school of Kenosha. He taught school for several winters and spent the summer months upon the home farm. Eventually he purchased property and concentrated his efforts upon its cultivation and improvement, thereon residing until he removed to Kenosha in 1909. He followed progressive methods in farm work, making a specialty of dairying.
In 1879 Mr. Jordan was married to Miss Mary L. Hartnell, a native of this County, and they became parents of three children: Merlie B., at home; John T., who is connected with the civil service at Los Angeles, California; and Harry L., who is engaged in the jewelry business in this city.
In politics, Mr. Jordan is a Republican. He has served as Treasurer of the School District for several years and has been Treasurer of the Somers Mutual Fire Association for a number of years. In 1898 he was called upon to mourn the loss of his wife, a most estimable lady who death was deeply regretted by many. Mr. Jordan is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church and for sixty-seven years has been a resident of this County.
