Florence Smith with Art Gunther and Cody Cappeli in front of her Maple House Cafe where she operated the Cafe in a small building just west of the historic old hotel located on the corner of 55th Street and 12th Avenue in Kenosha.  Many customers of the Cafe were railroad workers because it was near the Northwestern railroad.  Florence operated the restaurant until 1919 or 1920 when she opened a new one on Prairie Avenue (60th Street) across from the Allen A Hosiery Co.

The historic building with the arches on the right was known as the Maple House from 1896 to the mid-1920's.  In 1927 it became the Hotel Wisconsin  and the named changed in 1933 to the Schlitz Hotel.  After several other tenants, the building eventually went into disrepair until it was renovated for office space.
